Businesses are competing for attention across Google, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, email, and countless other channels. Advertising costs can rise while engagement declines, and even well-designed campaigns may reach people who are not ready to buy.
The challenge is no longer simply getting seen.
It is getting your business in front of the right person while they are actively researching a problem, comparing solutions, or deciding what to do next.
That is the opportunity behind ChatGPT Ads.
OpenAI has introduced advertising within ChatGPT and launched a self-service Ads Manager Beta for eligible advertisers. This gives businesses the ability to place sponsored messages beneath relevant ChatGPT responses.
However, ChatGPT advertising is not simply another version of Google Ads.
It is a conversational advertising environment. Relevance can be influenced by the context and intent of a person’s conversation, not just a single keyword or demographic profile.
For business owners, this creates a potentially valuable new marketing channel—but one that should still be approached carefully. ChatGPT Ads remains in beta, its capabilities are evolving quickly, and there are no established performance benchmarks across industries.
This guide explains how ChatGPT Ads works, what has recently changed, and how to determine whether your business is ready to test it.

ChatGPT Ads are sponsored placements that can appear below a ChatGPT response.
Each advertisement is visually separated from the response and clearly labeled as sponsored. An ad can include the advertiser’s name, logo, headline, description, image, landing page, and other product information.
OpenAI states that advertisements do not influence the answers ChatGPT generates. Advertisers also cannot pay to have ChatGPT recommend, rank, or favor their businesses within an organic response.
The platform evaluates several signals when selecting an eligible advertisement, including:
Context hints allow advertisers to describe the topics, situations, and conversations where an offer may be relevant. They are intended to guide matching, but they are not traditional exact-match keywords and do not guarantee that an ad will appear in a particular conversation. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Ads overview explains the current ad format and delivery process.
Search advertising captures demand when someone enters a query. Social media advertising often builds awareness based on interests, behavior, or audience characteristics.
ChatGPT introduces another type of intent.
People frequently use ChatGPT to describe an entire situation instead of entering a short search phrase. A user might explain their budget, industry, goals, current problems, preferences, and concerns across several messages.
For example, someone might ask:
These conversations can reveal the problem behind the purchase.
That does not automatically make ChatGPT Ads more effective than Google or Meta advertising. It does, however, give businesses an opportunity to become visible during a more detailed research and decision-making process.
OpenAI reported that its United States advertising pilot surpassed $100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks and had grown to more than 600 advertisers by March 2026. These numbers suggest strong early advertiser interest, but they are company-reported adoption figures—not evidence that every advertiser is generating a positive return. Reuters reported the early pilot figures and OpenAI’s expansion plans.
Advertiser feedback has also been mixed.
Some early advertisers see value in reaching people during comparison-focused conversations. Others have found the platform less developed than Google Ads and Meta Ads, particularly in campaign controls, testing, reporting, and optimization.
One advertiser interviewed by Business Insider reported a lower click-through rate than its Google Ads campaigns, although impressions and clicks improved as the campaign continued. That is one advertiser’s experience and should not be treated as an industry benchmark. Business Insider’s reporting highlights both the opportunity and the current limitations.
OpenAI confirms that ChatGPT Ads does not yet have established performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries, or campaign types. Results will depend on the objective, offer, creative, landing page, relevance, tracking, and overall setup. OpenAI’s advertiser FAQ describes the platform as being in the early stages of scaling.
ChatGPT Ads is developing quickly. Several recent additions make the platform more useful for performance-focused advertisers.
Advertisers can now select a Conversions objective and create conversion-optimized cost-per-click campaigns, also known as oCPC campaigns.
These campaigns attempt to prioritize clicks that are more likely to produce a selected action, such as:
Advertisers still pay for valid clicks, not conversions. Conversion tracking must be configured, and each campaign can optimize toward one supported standard event.
Existing Reach or Clicks campaigns cannot currently be converted into oCPC campaigns. A new campaign must be created with the Conversions objective. OpenAI also does not currently provide a recommended bid for oCPC campaigns. OpenAI’s oCPC campaign guide explains the current requirements and limitations.
Advertisers can create custom audiences using customer or prospect lists containing email addresses or phone numbers.
These audiences can be used to:
However, each audience must contain at least 25,000 matched users before it can be activated, and OpenAI recommends an audience of at least 100,000 users.
This threshold means custom audiences may be more practical for established companies with substantial first-party databases than for very small local businesses. OpenAI’s custom audience documentation outlines the matching and audience-size requirements.
ChatGPT Ads has also added or expanded features such as:
These developments bring ChatGPT Ads closer to the campaign-management capabilities advertisers expect from established platforms, although it is still less mature overall. Search Engine Land’s July 2026 platform update provides an overview of the latest additions.
Eligible businesses can create campaigns through OpenAI Ads Manager Beta.
The setup follows three primary levels: campaign, ad group, and advertisement.
As of July 2026, self-service Ads Manager is available in:
Businesses outside these markets can register their interest, but they may not yet be able to open a self-service advertising account. The current list is available through OpenAI’s country availability page.
Businesses should also review OpenAI’s advertising policies before developing a campaign. Certain products, services, industries, claims, and landing pages are prohibited or restricted.
For example, political advertising and legal services advertising are currently prohibited. Health and financial advertisements may be subject to market-specific restrictions, advertiser verification, or additional review. OpenAI’s advertising policies apply to the complete campaign, including the advertiser, copy, images, claims, and destination page.
ChatGPT Ads currently documents three campaign objectives:
A company launching a new product may choose Reach to increase awareness. A business with an established landing page may choose Clicks to generate website traffic. An advertiser with reliable conversion tracking and sufficient conversion activity may consider the Conversions objective.
The objective should reflect the business result you genuinely need—not simply the metric that looks easiest to generate.
Each campaign contains the objective, budget, schedule, and targeting.
Within the campaign, ad groups organize advertisements around a specific theme, offer, customer problem, or use case. Context hints can then help describe the conversations in which that offer may be relevant.
For example, a marketing agency should not place every service into one broad ad group.
It could instead build separate ad groups for:
Each ad group represents a different need and should use messaging appropriate to that situation.
ChatGPT Ads rewards clarity.
OpenAI recommends creating multiple title and description variations for each offer. These variations should not simply rearrange the same words. Each should introduce a distinct problem, benefit, use case, or customer priority.
A weak advertisement might say:
“Grow Your Business Today.”
This does not explain what the company offers, who the service is for, or how it provides value.
A stronger advertisement could say:
“Digital Marketing for Local Businesses”
“Build a measurable campaign designed to increase local visibility, leads, and customer visits.”
The second version provides both the advertising system and the customer with more useful context.
OpenAI’s current creative guidance recommends specific, accurate, benefit-focused copy that communicates when an offer may be helpful.
ChatGPT Ads supports CPM and CPC buying options.
For Clicks campaigns, OpenAI currently recommends testing a maximum CPC bid of approximately $3 to $5. This is starting guidance for a maximum bid—not an average or guaranteed cost per click.
For conversion-optimized campaigns, OpenAI does not currently recommend a standard bid amount.
Actual costs and campaign delivery may be affected by:
ChatGPT Ads uses a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. A higher bid can help, but it does not automatically guarantee delivery if the advertisement is poorly aligned with the conversation.
New advertisers may benefit from using a daily budget initially so they can monitor delivery before committing to a larger campaign-total budget.
The advertisement and landing page should feel like one continuous experience.
If the ad promotes restaurant marketing services, it should lead to a page about restaurant marketing—not a general agency homepage that forces visitors to search for the service.
A strong destination page should include:
The landing page must also be accessible to OpenAI’s review and advertising systems.
Businesses can measure post-click actions using the OpenAI Pixel, Conversions API, or both.
Supported actions can include purchases, registrations, and lead submissions. OpenAI can evaluate events using the configured conversion event, available attribution signals, and the applicable attribution window.
Advertisers can also add UTM parameters to their landing-page URLs to identify ChatGPT Ads traffic in Google Analytics or another analytics platform.
OpenAI recommends using the Pixel and Conversions API together when possible, with consistent event IDs to prevent duplicate conversions. Businesses must also provide appropriate data disclosures and obtain legally required consent before sharing eligible customer information. OpenAI’s conversion measurement guide explains these requirements.
ChatGPT Ads should initially be treated as a structured experiment.
The objective is not to prove that the platform is better than every existing advertising channel. It is to determine whether it can reach qualified customers and contribute to profitable business outcomes.
A practical pilot should include:
Choose one offer with a clear target customer, benefit, and next step. Avoid testing an entire business with several unrelated products or services at once.
Identify the conversations that may happen before someone needs the offer.
Ask:
Use these insights to develop context hints, ad groups, and creative variations.
Decide what should happen after a person clicks.
The conversion could be a purchase, consultation booking, demo request, registration, or lead submission. The landing page and follow-up process should support that action.
Measure more than impressions and clicks.
Depending on the campaign, evaluate:
High engagement does not automatically mean the campaign is attracting valuable customers.
Compare ChatGPT Ads with your existing Google, Meta, email, SEO, and social media activity.
The platform may produce fewer clicks but more qualified inquiries—or it may generate curiosity without enough conversions. Only your own campaign and sales data can reveal its role in your marketing mix.
Businesses should avoid:
The platform is new, but the fundamentals remain familiar: understand the customer, communicate a relevant benefit, create a consistent conversion path, and measure what contributes to the business.
ChatGPT Ads may be worth testing if your business has:
It may be too early if your offer is unclear, your website cannot convert visitors, your sales team cannot follow up promptly, or you do not have a reliable way to measure results.
Advertising can increase visibility. It cannot fix a confusing offer or disconnected customer journey on its own.
No. OpenAI says advertisements are not shown to people who identify themselves—or are predicted by its systems—as being under 18.
No. Temporary Chats do not currently display advertisements.
No. Paid advertisements are separate from ChatGPT’s response. Advertising does not allow a business to purchase a favorable organic recommendation or change how the answer is ranked.
No. Products uploaded through an advertising feed are currently eligible for paid advertisements only. OpenAI states that feed products do not automatically appear in organic ChatGPT conversations.
Eligible users can view why an advertisement was shown, dismiss it, provide feedback, and manage ad-personalization settings. OpenAI says advertisers receive aggregated performance information rather than access to individual conversations.
Not currently. A business must create a new campaign and select the Conversions objective. The selected objective and conversion event cannot be changed after the oCPC campaign is created.
ChatGPT Ads creates a new opportunity to reach people while they are exploring problems, comparing alternatives, and making decisions.
But entering a new platform early is not a complete strategy.
Your business still needs a strong offer, accurate targeting, useful creative, a relevant landing page, conversion tracking, and a clear system for turning interest into customers.
SociallyBuzz can help your business evaluate whether ChatGPT Ads fits your goals, develop a conversational advertising strategy, create campaign assets, improve your landing pages, and measure the results.
